Articulating Chair
h860 w570 d800 upright
A reconfigurable chair that simulates the qualities of a recliner. It was designed for younger people who are alienated by ‘grandpa’ recliners and were perhaps unappreciative of the necessity of relaxation. I wanted this chair to encourage an exclusive relationship with its user- interaction and added functionality were tools used to achieve this task. The articulating chair is largely a reaction against the dominance of styling in furniture design.
Styling is only one part of the design process - this process was focused on the chair’s occupation. The first prototype of the articulating chair received a commendation in Object magazine’s annual competition and exhibition, New Design 2006.
